ChargeNet, established in 2015, is New Zealand’s largest EV charging network, with over 400 fast charging points nationwide. It enables EV drivers to travel across the country with confidence and convenience. In October 2024, Genesis Energy acquired a majority stake in ChargeNet, further strengthening its commitment to sustainable transport.
ChargeNet approached me to redesign their EV Charging App, aiming to improve its overall functionality and user experience. The existing app had an inconsistent start process across different charger models, making it confusing for users. Drivers were unable to see when their charging session would end, creating uncertainty. Overall, the app felt clunky and inefficient, leading to a frustrating user experience.
To redesign the app, I conducted extensive research, speaking with EV drivers at ChargeNet stations and running multiple user tests to refine the experience. I introduced a unified start process for all chargers, ensuring a seamless and consistent journey. Guided visuals now help users navigate charging, reducing confusion. The new ‘Watch Session’ feature allows drivers to monitor charge progress in real time, eliminating uncertainty about session duration. An improved map view provides clearer site details, available plugs, and speeds at a glance. These enhancements transformed the app into a more intuitive and user-friendly experience, making EV charging simpler and more reliable for ChargeNet customers.
